Camel Cigarettes
Camel cigarette were first launched in USA in the year 1913 by R.J. Reynolds cigarette brands. Within few years of its launch this brand became America's No. 1 selling cigarette. The reason is due to its very successful ad campaigns and its exceptional mix of Turkish tobacco and the local Virginia tobacco. Camel has over the years introduced innumerable varieties like Camel Menthol, Camel lights, Camel White and others. Some of the well known varieties introduced in America are Camel (non-filter), Camel Filters, Camel Filters Wides, Camel Filters 99's, Camel Blue (Lights), Camel No. 9, Camel Blue Wides (Lights), Camel No. 9 100's, Camel Blue 99's (Lights), Camel No. 9 Menthe, Camel Platinum (Silver) (Ultra Lights), Camel No. 9 Menthe 100's, and many more.
R.J. Reynolds wanted to develop something unique, something different; those days most tobacco smokers used to roll their cigarettes themselves, but Reynolds want to give a different more appealing tobacco product. He introduced for the first time pre-rolled cigarettes and he called it Camel cigarettes. He named thus to indicate the type of paper used, he used the very well known Turkish paper. All these innovative ideas enabled them to sell about 420 million cigarettes within a year.
The company used eye-catching slogans in their advertisements like "I'd walk a mile for a Camel", that created some kind of temptation in the minds of their customers. They had innovative modes of marketing styles, to make their product popular. It was distributed for free during the times of World War I and World War II.
In the year 1987, the manufactures created Joe camel as their company mascot, but the American Medical Association later released a report which found that young children could recognize this mascot more than any other cartoon character like Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, etc. The Medical Association requested the tobacco company to terminate the campaign at once, which the company refused to do. After repeated appeals the tobacco company finally terminated the Joe camel advertisement campaign in 1997.
